Puerto Morelos

The nearest village is Puerto Morelos, a charming fishing village which has been escaped the ravages of construction and tourism. Previously the centre for the production of gum for the US chewing gum market cultivated from the chicle, Puerto Morelos is now better know for having the second largest coral reef. This is protected by the National Marine Park and local commitment to preservation of the environment which has kept development of the area to a minimum. The original lighthouse leans askew since Hurricane Beulah in 1966.

Puerto Morelos has numerous restaurants, bars and stores. The fishing boats are moored along the seafront and local fishermen bring their catch to the pier.

Join in yoga on the beach at 8.15 each morning. There are many yoga centres in Puerto Morelos.

There is a variety of shops in and around the town square. Souvenir items, jewellery, and clothing are all available. The handicraft market shows and sells regional folk art, clothing, and crafts. View hammocks being made at one family’s craft booth.

Fishing – The fishing boats can pick you up from Villa Caracol. and take you for a few hours of deep sea fishing. You can catch barracuda, grouper, and billfish. Cook your catch at home in the evening.

Croco-Cun Zoo – At the touring from Highway 307 to Villa Caracol is the Croco-Cun Zoo with a collection of crocodiles and other indigenous animals . Offers immensely informative tours (available in English) and opportunities to hold baby crocs and feed the deer.
